Moved to this weekend in hope of better weather.
Bell Mountain's distinctive dome-shaped summit anchors distant views of the Lemhi Range. It's even more spectacular close-up. Join us in an off-trail walk up the east ridge of this 11,612-ft. peak with some scrambling including a steep but short headwall near the summit (YDS 3 scrambling with some exposure). Round trip is about 6 miles with 3,000 ft. of elevation gain.
Other peaks above 10,000 feet are accessible from the same area and await our discovery on Sunday. All are YDS 3 or 3-4 (scrambling with more exposure), involve about 4 miles rounds trip, up to 2,800 ft. elevation gain, and rough off-trail footing.
We'll leave Boise on Friday mid-day to start the drive (5 hours on pavement and about another hour on unpaved roads) and car-camp. Saturday we hike up Bell Mountain. Sunday we hike up a nearby 10,000-ft peak and return to Boise. In anticipation of the afternoon thunderstorms common to the mountains in the summer, we'll start each day early to ensure that we are off exposed terrain after noon.
Participants need the 10+ essentials, sturdy ankle-high hiking boots, and car-camp gear (sleeping bag, pad, tent). They must be in good physical conditioning for a moderate hiking pace and be comfortable with mild exposure.
The trip is limited to four partipants unless another driver with 4WD signs up. No dogs, please.
