Join us in viewing the solar eclipse from a summit that is over 10,000 feet in elevation. On Sunday we will drive from Boise to our trailhead in the Lost River Range and backpack up to 4 miles with 3,300 feet of elevation to our high and dry camp. On Monday morning we'll hike about a mile (with about a 1,500 foot gain) to the summit in time for the eclipse, backpack out and return to Boise.
This exploratory hike will be YDS Class 2, off trail with uncertain footing. Participants need to be in good shape. Lightweight 3-season backpacking gear is a must not only because of the steepness of the climb but also because you need to carry all your water for the afternoon, evening, and next day - about a gallon (nearly 9 pounds).
The trailhead is about 3.5 hours from Boise on pavement, plus another 12 miles on dirt roads. High clearance vehicles are recommended. No dogs, please.
If there is enough interest, we will leave Boise on Friday afternoon, car camp and day hike another peak in the area on Saturday.
