Please RSVP to Ilyse directly (email address above). Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about either the orientation or the program. This is my third year as a volunteer and it is a great program!
SnowSchool desperately needs more volunteers!
Do you like to snowshoe? Do you have a passion for the outdoors and enjoy sharing your interest and knowledge with others? Do you have 3 free days between now and the end of March? If so, please think about volunteering for SnowSchool!!
SnowSchool is a unique program where kids experience the amazing winter environment on snowshoes! SnowSchool relies on volunteers to engage over 1,500 kids each winter. As a SnowSchool volunteer you'll strap on snowshoes and lead and teach small groups of students through the national forest. Our days run from 8:45am to 3pm(driving time included) Tuesday through Friday. We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of 3 on-snow days to really experience the program.
If you are interested, feel free to attend one of two orientation days: Monday, February 3rd 9am-10am or Thursday, February 6th 4pm-5pm. Both orientations will be held at the Bogus Basin downtown office (2600 N. Bogus Basin Rd.). Please email SnowSchool coordinator, ilyse Sakamoto, at email@example.com or call her at (208) 377-3737 to RSVP. Share your passion of the outdoors and inspire youth of the Treasure Valley through SnowSchool!
Couple of additional details;
We meet at the bottom of Bogus Basin to car pool so the hassle and expense of driving is shared. If you don't feel comfortable driving up Bogus Basin road (either because of your car or inexperience with the road) - you can always grab a ride with someone who is.
Many of these children have never been to Bogus Basin and many have never even played in the snow. It is great fun to introduce them to snowshoeing, the forest, and winter on the mountain.
The curriculum is Winter Ecology and/or Snow Science. Don't worry if you don't know much about either of those topics. Excellent training is provided and you can always shadow a more experienced leader first.
Most of the groups are 4, 5, 6 graders but there are also a few Jr. High and High School groups.
You can "'shadow" a more experienced leader for a few times before you go out on your own. You are never the only adult out with the kids; you will either have a parent chaperone from the school, a teacher from the school, or another SnowSchool volunteer.
If you commit to volunteering 3 or more times you get a free Nordic trails pass!!
Please come to one of the orientation nights and see if it is something you would enjoy!
